After a break over the summer, The Lab's conversation series is back with Dr. Antonia M. Varela Pérez, astrophysicist at the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) and director of the Starlight Foundation.

In Session 17, Dr. Varela Pérez will discuss the vital topic of "Sky Law" and the many initiatives related to preserving astronomical quality, and science-policy initiatives for protecting the sky with respect to light pollution; electrical pollution; atmospheric pollution; and aviation routes.

Exploring the Sustainability Challenge

Dr. Antonia Varela, Director of the Starlight Foundation, has a PhD in Astrophysics and is a researcher at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias where she has worked since 1988, formerly as Senior Engineer. Dr. Varela is also President of the Association of Business & Professional Women (BPW) Canarias, within BPW Spain and BPW International. Recently elected Director of the Museum of Science and Cosmos of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, she is also a member of the International Astronomical Union, the Spanish Society of Astronomy, the Spanish Network of Studies on Light Pollution and leads the Starlight Foundation's Working Group on Scientific Tourism/Astro-tourism of Affiliate Members of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) constituted in September 2019.

Exploring the Sustainability Challenge was launched in 2021 by The Sustainability Laboratory. Each event features lively conversation with a thought leader discussing an urgent sustainability issue facing the planet. This free series occurs over Zoom and is hosted by The Lab's founder, Dr. Michael Ben-Eli in collaboration with Elizabeth Thompson, former Executive Director of Buckminster Fuller Challenge program,.
